Lenses for Long-Wave Infrared (LWIR) Cameras for 8-12 µm

LWIR Manual Focus Lens

Shape Optics provides LWIR Manual Focus Lenses for thermal imaging systems operating in the 8–12 µm wavelength range. These lenses allow operators to adjust image sharpness through direct mechanical focusing, making them suitable for applications requiring occasional focus adjustment at different observation distances.

Available in various focal lengths and optical configurations, our manual focus lenses support compatible uncooled infrared detectors and can be integrated into industrial inspection, portable thermal imaging, surveillance, and research systems.

How Does Manual Focus Lens Work?

An LWIR manual focus lens uses a mechanical focusing mechanism to adjust the position of the optical elements relative to the infrared detector. By rotating the focus ring or adjusting the designated focusing mechanism, operators can optimize image sharpness for the required observation distance.

Unlike fixed-focus optical systems, manual focusing allows the lens to accommodate different working distances without requiring an electronic focus motor or controller.

For installations where the observation distance remains relatively constant, the lens can be focused during setup and left at the selected position. Where observation distances change, operators can readjust focus manually to obtain a sharper thermal image.

Manual Focus vs Motorized Focus

Manual focus lenses are suitable for systems where direct access to the lens is available and frequent remote adjustment is unnecessary. For applications requiring electronic focus adjustment or remote operation, explore our LWIR Motorized Focus Lens solutions.

Key Considerations for Lens Selection

Selecting an LWIR manual focus lens requires evaluating the detector format, required observation distance, optical performance, and focusing mechanism.

Parameter Selection Considerations
Focal Length Determine the required field of view and target observation distance.
Detector Compatibility Match the lens to the detector resolution, pixel pitch, and active image size.
F-number (F/#) Select an appropriate aperture for the detector and imaging requirements.
Focus Adjustment Range Confirm the minimum object distance and supported focusing range.
Focus Mechanism Consider focus-ring accessibility, adjustment precision, and locking requirements.
Optical Performance Evaluate MTF, distortion, transmission, and image quality at relevant focus positions.
Mechanical Interface Review lens mounting dimensions, back focal distance, and installation space.
Operating Environment Consider temperature changes, vibration, and mechanical stability.
